David Shaw
David Shaw, winner of the Chethams School of Music/Chester Philharmonic Concerto Prize, is 18 and comes from North Wales.
He started playing the violin age 5 and joined Chethams in 2006, first studying with Catherine Perkins and then with Maceij Rakowski since 2009. He has been studying with Sebastian Mueller since September 2014. He was Chethams concerto soloist in June 2011 and his quartet was chosen to perform at the official opening of the new Chethams building in February 2012. David has given recitals throughout the UK as well as Italy, Germany and Hungary He has been the recipient of many prizes including the Muriel Lewis Prize from Rhyl Music Club for the most promising young musician of 2009/2010 and more recently the Ida Carrol Bursary prize at Chethams. In 2009 David was the youngest musician ever to have reached the final of Texaco Young Musician of Wales, playing alongside the City of Cardiff Symphony Orchestra. |
As a result of this, David was invited to perform in ‘One Thousand Christmas Voices’ in Llangollen, which was televised on S4C. He has also performed at many festivals including Chester Summer Music Festival, Lanercost Festival in Cumbria, Conwy Classical Music Festival, Celyn, Beaumaris and Swaledale Festivals and also the Mercatello Festival in Italy.
His quartet played at the Jersey Academy of Music in June 2010 and at the Barratt Due Institute of Music, Oslo, Norway in November 2011. He has also had the privilege of performing recitals at the Wigmore Hall and St. James’s Church, Picadilly in London with his string quartet.
David recently enjoyed master classes with Raphael Todes, Pavel Fischer, Olivier Charlier and the Carducci Quartet and renowned Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova.
Future engagements include an event for the Birmingham Rotary Club, an appearance at Venue Cymru to commemorate the Holocaust and playing a concerto solo with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra.
